Fell Race Championship 2022

From our Fell Running correspondent Colin Brearley…

The club fell championship races are set out below.

The first race of the championship is at Wolf’s Pit on 20 March. Entries are now open at www.fabian4.co.uk . This is also the county fell championship race for 2022 – if you want to take part in the county champs, you need to enter as normal, and then once you have collected your number on the day, go to the Notts desk to register.

With a fairly full FRA calendar to choose from, I have increased the championship back up to 12 races, with the best 6 races counting. There is a good mix of races, with a number of the summer mid-week evening races – nearly all of these mid-week races are suitable for newcomers to fell-running, on well-marked courses. There isn’t a better way to spend a summer evening, so why not give them a try if you haven’t been out on the fells before.

Unfortunately, most FRA races this year seem to be continuing with a pre-entry only policy – where that is the case I will update everyone via Running Free and the club Facebook page when entries open.

Races for this year:

  1. Wolf’s Pit – Sunday 20 March (Start time TBC – likely 11am) – cat AS (9.2km and 467m ascent). This is also the Nottinghamshire County Championship race for 2022. Entries now open at fabian4.co.uk

  2. Kinder Downfall – Sunday 17 April 11:30am – cat BM (15.4km and 600m). Goes exactly where the name suggests! Pre-entry required – entries open around 5 Feb at fabian4.co.uk

  3. Burbage Skyline – Tuesday 10 May 7:30pm – cat BS (7km, 189m). A short but scenic race round the Burbage valley. A good one for people wanting to try their first fell race.

  4. Bamford Sheepdog Trials – Thursday 2 June 1:00pm – cat BS (7.2km and 305m). A direct line up Win Hill followed by one of the best descents the Peak has to offer.

  5. Grindleford – Thursday 16 June 7:30pm – cat BS (7.7km and 220m). Another good beginners race, but be prepared for the final river crossing!

  6. Kinder Trog – Sunday 26 June 11:00am – cat BL (25km and 900m). The first of this year’s two “Long” fell races. A great route with plenty of ups and downs.

  7. Sheldon – Thursday 21 July 7:30pm – cat BS (6.5km and 162m). Replacement for Black Rocks to avoid clash with summer league.

  8. Brassington Hill Race – Thursday 28 July 7:30pm – cat BS (9km and 320m). A change of scenery, heading into the White Peak for a change.

  9. Ricky’s Race – Thursday 11 August 7:00pm – cat BS (7.3km and 240m). Another more local race, that had great reviews from those in the club that did it last year

  10. Great Longstone – Friday 2 September 6:30pm – cat BS (7.7km and 290m). Wind your way up onto Longstone Edge then prepare for a fast and furious descent back down to the village

  11. Tour of Bradwell – TBC September – cat BL (25km and 915m) The second Long race of the championships, this is a cracking race taking in some of the best parts of the Hope Valley.

  12. Roaches – 13 November 10:30am – cat BL (24.1km and 1128m). Back by popular demand, a tough but popular finish to the season.

Scoring

There is a separate championship for men and women.

The first club finisher in each race will receive 4 points, the second finisher 3 points and the third finisher 2 points. All other finishers will receive 1 point.

The best 4 races for each member will count towards the total score.

In the event of a points tie the longer races (AL/BL/CL category) will score higher.

Notts Fell Champs

The Notts Fell Champs 2022 will be a single race at the Wolf’s Pit race on Sunday 20 March. Please see the Notts AAA website for brief details: https://www.nottsaaa.org/landingpage/fell-running
